Last Saturday morning I was lounging in bed, watching
Blues Clues with one of my twin 6 year old granddaughters. The phone
rang, and it was Mike O'Loughlin calling to give me information on the web site
and 40th reunion. I just hoped that he couldn't hear the background noise!.
I attended Mount Holyoke College, and graduated in 1966 with a major in math and minors in history and English literature. Over the years, my jobs included pension analyst, mathematician, computer programmer, stay at home mom, and bookkeeper/accountant. I met my husband, Roy Basler (a physicist), during a job interview. He hired me because I was the only applicant who knew the derivative of the tangent. A few years later, his come-on line was, "how would you like to come to my place for a cup of Constant Comment?" We've been constant for 31 years now. ![]() Sally with son, Julian, and husband, Roy Basler One of the main joys in our life has been our 5 offspring and 7 grandchildren. Roy's daughter, Liz, is a dermatologist in Houston, and has 3 children. His son, Ethan, is a programmer in St. Louis, and has 1 son. We have 3 sons together. Jason, who is almost 30, is a computer scientist at IBM. He lives in San Jose with his wife and three daughters. Our second son, Julian, earned a masters in physics at Stanford, then decided that there was no future in the field. He is now working for an investment banking software firm. He was recently married, and purchased one of California's enormously overpriced houses. Joshua, the youngest at 24, works for a biotech company. He still lives at home, and tries his best to make us wish he'd move out. ![]() Jason, Julian, and Joshua ![]() Jason and his family We came to Menlo Park, CA, 28 years ago, and can't imagine living anyplace nicer. We both recently retired, so we're adjusting to a new lifestyle. Roy works (plays) a lot on the computer. I belong to 4 book clubs, and do a pretty good job of keeping up with all the reading. I finally got a passport 6 years ago, and have made up for lost traveling-time. Italy, Australia, Greece, and Norway have been favorite destinations. We also do a lot of baby-sitting for the granddaughters. They are a lot of fun, but exhausting. There is a reason to have children when you're young. One of the low points of our life has been my health. I've been battling cancer for over 17 years, and other ailments prior to that. However, when I see all the In memoriums on our class list, I feel lucky just still to be alive. The treatments have taken a toll. A few years ago, strangers assumed that the twins were my daughters. Now, I'm just asked if I'd like a senior discount. Thanks to Mike, Dick, and all of the others working on the reunion, and I hope to see you in Sept. Sally Ferris Basler |
